Gerhard Schubert (rugby player)

Gerhard Schubert (born January 28, 1942 in Leipzig ) is a German rugby union coach and referee and former player. Among other things, he coached the GDR's national rugby union team . As a player he was multiple GDR champions and was a record national player.

Live and act

Gerhard Schubert started playing rugby at Traktor Leipzig in 1958. In the 1970s and 80s Schubert played for what was then the top club of the GDR, BSG Lokomotive Wahren-Leipzig . With this club he won the championship four times and the cup of the German Rugby Sports Association of the GDR once . Schubert was appointed to the national team as the top performer of his club. He played his first international match at the 1963 Peace Cup in the Romanian Piteşti against Poland . The GDR team won the game 11: 6. The last time he was in the squad was in 1983 at the Friendship Tournament in Varna, Bulgaria . In total, he played 41 times for the GDR, which made him a record national player together with Ralf Stieg . From 1983 to 1985, Gerhard Schubert was the head coach of the national team.

In the 2014/15 season, Schubert was tactics trainer for the Rugby Club Leipzig and referee in the referees' association in the German Rugby Association . He has a referee B license.
