Gerhard Starke
Gerhard Starke (born January 2, 1927 ) is a former German soccer player. In 1951 he played for Stahl Altenburg in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR football .
Athletic career
When in the second half of the 1950/51 season the hitherto regular midfielder Hans Pohle at the GDR upper division company Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Stahl Altenburg was out for a long time, the 24-year-old Gerhard Starke, who had not previously played for Altenburg, moved up to the team. First, the player- coach Herbert Klemig experimented with the newcomer in various positions, until he finally used him regularly in defense. Starke played his first game in the league in the second game of the second half of the season as a right winger and scored a goal in the Altenburg - VfB Pankow encounter in a 5-1 victory. He then came twice in midfield until he finally established himself as a defender. On the penultimate match day he scored his second goal. Strong finally ended the season with 15 out of 16 possible league appearances. In the following season he was no longer part of the BSG Stahl squad and later no longer played in top football.
