Gerhard Wittig
Gerhard Wittig (born April 16, 1930 ) is a former German police officer. He was lieutenant general and head of the district authority of the German People's Police (BDVP) in Erfurt .
Life
Wittig, an agricultural assistant by profession, joined the SED and in 1948 became a member of the German People's Police (VP). He embarked on an officer career and qualified as a qualified lawyer . Until May 1961 he was head of the protection police department in the BDVP Leipzig , then he took over the function of chief of staff of the district operations command (BEL) Leipzig with the rank of major.
From 1968 to 1990 he was head of the BDVP Erfurt (successor to Heinrich Hertel, who died in December 1967). At the same time he was from 1969 to 1989 member of the SED district leadership Erfurt and from 1971 to 1990 deputy of the District Day Erfurt. He was appointed major general by Erich Honecker on June 26, 1975 and promoted to lieutenant general on June 30, 1987.
