Gerhard Zechner

Gerhard Zechner (born April 18, 1957 in Bad Gastein ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and state official. From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

Zechner attended elementary and secondary school in Bad Gastein between 1963 and 1971 and then from 1971 to 1976 the Federal Trade Academy in Salzburg, from which he graduated in 1976 with the Matura . From 1976 to 1977 he did his community service at the Red Cross and then studied political science as well as journalism and communication science at the University of Salzburg from 1977 . In 1984 he received his doctorate in philosophy ( Dr. Phil. ) In Salzburg . He then worked from 1984 to 1994 as the state parliamentary club secretary of the SPÖ Vorarlberg and in 1994 worked as a specialist in social sciences for the Vorarlberg state library. In 2001 he became head of the Acquisitions and Portfolio Development department. As part of his work in the regional library, from 2001 to 2002 he completed basic training for application group A1 "Library, Information and Documentation Service (BID)" at the University Library of Vienna 2001-2002 and trained from 2005 to 2006 through a business administration course for State employees at the Administrative Academy of the Office of the Vorarlberg State Government.

Politics and functions

Zechner joined the SPÖ in 1983 and was involved in local politics from 1990 to 2000 as a member of the Bregenz city council. From 1990 to 1995 he was deputy chairman of the family and youth committees and a member of the environmental and finance committees. From 1994 to 1995 he was a member of the Personnel Commission and from 1995 to 2000 a member of the Environment and Audit Committees. Until 2000 he was also a member of the supervisory board of Pfänderbahn AG and a member of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Bregenz.

From November 4, 1994 to October 4, 1999, Zechner represented the SPÖ in the Vorarlberg state parliament as a member of the Bregenz constituency, where he was area spokesman for transport, the environment and youth of the SPÖ state parliament club. He was also a member of the Legal Committee, a member of the Environment Committee, a member of the Culture Committee and chairman of the Ombudsman Committee. Within the party, he worked from 1986 to 2000 as a member of the state education committee of the SPÖ Vorarlberg and from 1995 to 1999 was a member of the state party executive and the state party presidium of the SPÖ Vorarlberg. Furthermore, he was active as the city party chairman of the SPÖ Bregenz from 1992 to 1999 and worked from 1995 to 1999 as deputy state party chairman of the SPÖ Vorarlberg. Until 1999 and 2001 he was also a member of the SPÖ district party leadership in Bregenz and a member of the party arbitration court of the SPÖ Vorarlberg.

In addition to his political functions, Zechner was involved as a member of the advisory board of the Working Group on Democratic Socialists in the Alpine Region (ASA), was a member, treasurer and member of the executive committee of the Association of Austrian Librarians (VÖB), a member of the Austrian Society for Political Science (ÖGPW) and a member of the Austrian Society for Sociology (ÖGS).

Private

Zechner was born as the son of the hairdresser Josef Zechner and his wife Berta Reichl. His parents came from Lower Austria. Gerhard Zechner married Margit Kraßnitzer, who was born in Carinthia, in 1988, although the marriage remained childless.
