Gérard de Grandson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gérard de Grandson († 1278 ) was Bishop of Verdun from 1275 until his death . Gérard came from the wealthy noble family of the Lords of Grandson in north-western Vaud . He was the son of Pierre I, Sire de Grandson and Agnes von Neuenburg , a daughter of Count Ulrich III. from Neuchâtel. His successor as Bishop of Verdun was his younger brother Henri de Grandson .

Gérard was canon in Langres in 1263, later he became Primicerius in Verdun . Like his brothers Othon and Wilhelm, he was in the service of the English king. Pope Gregory X appointed him bishop of Verdun in 1275 at the request of King Edward I of England and the Count of Bar in order to curb French influence. Gérard rarely stayed in his diocese and shortly after his appointment entrusted two canons with the administration of the diocese's secular affairs. He tried to preserve the episcopal property and built new churches, including the church of the Cistercian monastery of Châtillon , where he was buried after his death in 1278.
