The name Gerhild is made up of the two Old High German words gēr = spear and hiltja = fight . Gerhild is therefore a spear fighter. She is comparable to Brünhild , the fighter with the breastplate.

The Catholic memorial day ( name day ) for Gerhild (Kerhild) of Konstanz is September 23rd . In the 12th century she led a life of penance as a recluse in the monastery of St. Gallen (Switzerland). Recluses lived secluded in a monastery cell or hermitage.
