The World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH) is an international association of scientists and clinicians. Its seat is at the University of Tampere , Finland. The task of the association is to promote the mental health of infants, toddlers and preschool children, paying particular attention to cultural, regional and social aspects.

In particular, the following individual tasks are defined:

  • Expanding knowledge of mental development and its disorders in children from conception to three years;
  • Dissemination of scientific knowledge on services for the care, intervention and prevention of mental disorders and impairments in childhood;
  • Disseminating evidence-based knowledge on ways to support transition to parenting and the healthy aspects of parenting and caring environments;
  • International collaboration of professionals concerned with promoting the optimal development of young children and the prevention and treatment of mental disorders in the early years;
  • Aspects of research, education and interventions in the above areas.

The WAIMH has 58 member organizations (WAIMH Affiliates) on all continents. Individual membership is also possible. The Society for Mental Health in Early Childhood (GAIMH = German-Speaking Association for Infant Mental Health) is one of these subsidiaries with members from Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It was founded in 1996, one of its founding members is the psychoanalyst Karl Heinz Brisch .

WAIMH organizes regular world congresses, the 16th congress will take place in Rome in 2018. The bimonthly Infant Mental Health Journal is the official journal of the Society, along with the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH).

WAIMH was founded in 1980 as the World Association for Infant Psychiatry (WAIP) . In 1985 at the Washington Congress, it was renamed the Association for Infant Psychiatry and Allied Disciplines (WAIPAD) . In 1992 the name changed to the World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH) as the WAIPAD merged with the International Association for Infant Mental Health (IAIMH) .
