history

The idea for a German school in Sydney came up in 1986. In 1987, the German-Australian School for Encounters met to plan. The school association German School Johannes Gutenberg was founded in August . Some planned but abandoned locations were Chester Hill , Bellevue Hill and Maroubra . Since it was not possible to agree on a location, lessons could not be started at the start of the Australian school year in February 1988. Cooperation with the French school in Sydney was considered. In May the school association was dissolved and a successor named German School Johannes Gutenberg Limited by Guarantee was founded.

When the Prospect Public School closed, the building was rented and the first teacher hired. After the renovation in January 1989, the German Consul General opened the school. The first day after the opening was the first day of school for 28 students and five teachers. The school books were not sent until the end of February. However, the search for a permanent location was not over yet. The 1990 school year began with 54 students. The Ryde location was discussed. The first headmaster sent from Germany was Jürgen Koch, who started his job in 1991. Classes in Ryde began in 1992 with 79 students.

In 2003 the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) was accepted. In 2004 planning permission was obtained in Terrey Hills. With 239 students, the school had the second highest level ever this year.
