Germar Fountain

The Germar Fountain is located in the Germeringer district of Neugermering in the Wittelsbacher Höfe between Munich and Wittelsbacher Strasse. It was built in October 1973 according to plans by Prof. Josef Dering and the sculptor Alfred de Vivanco-Luyken.

history

The fountain was created in 1973 on behalf of WWK Versicherung, which names Josef Dering (1910–1999) from Eichenau and the sculptor Alfred de Vivanco-Luyken as the artist . Inspiration was the folk etymological derivation of the place name “Germering” from a speculative local founder “Germar, the Germanic”; even if the toponomics has not yet been clearly clarified. While Dering designed the stone, de Vivanco-Luyken was responsible for the fountain. The picture of the "Germar" in the stone comes from a book about the Germanic peoples .

Appearance

The well system consists of an artificial gradient that from a monolith made of granite is crowned. The Germanic warrior Germar is artistically depicted on the front . Since the name Germar stands for the famous spear, the person on the fountain was depicted with a spear. The water flows over a slightly sloping, multi-colored rock formation into a large collecting basin. The dimensions of the facility are 32 × 24 meters. The area is delimited by deciduous and coniferous trees and some bushes. Since the inner courtyard of the WWK settlement had to be redesigned, the fountain was shut down for a few years and was reopened in summer 2003 . Due to adhesion problems and slippery stones, the fountain must not be entered. With its dimensions, the fountain is the largest in Germering and is used in the park between the high-rise buildings for relaxation and, together with the surrounding vegetation, to improve the microclimate.
