Gernot Sonneck

Gernot Sonneck (* 1942 ) is an Austrian doctor and psychotherapist . He was director of the Institute for Medical Psychology at the Medical University of Vienna and chairman of the board of the Vienna Crisis Intervention Center.

His work focuses on crisis intervention and suicide prevention . He was instrumental in founding the Vienna Crisis Intervention Center, the Austrian Society for Suicide Prevention (ÖGS) and the Wiener Werkstätte for Suicide Research, as well as in the development of the National Austrian Suicide Prevention Plan.

Life and work

Sonneck completed his training as a specialist in psychiatry and neurology in 1976 . He completed his training as a psychotherapist as a student of Erwin Ringels , a representative of individual psychology . In 1985 he became secretary of the 1960 a. a. International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) founded by Ringel. Shortly thereafter, the Austrian Society for Suicide Prevention (ÖGS) was founded. In 1991 he took over the management of the Institute for Medical Psychology at the University of Vienna as Ringel's successor. Since 1999 he has been chairman of the board of the Vienna Crisis Intervention Center.
