The former mountain farming village Gerstruben in the Oberstdorf market is one of the highest places in Germany ( 1155  m ). It lies at the beginning of the Dietersbach valley and once had eleven farmsteads and a chapel. Today there are still five houses from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as the chapel from the 17th century. Another building is the “Rechtler” restaurant, a mountain inn that is open and inhabited all year round. A museum is now housed in the “Jakobe House” and is open every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the season.

history

The exact origin of the settlement in Gerstruben can no longer be traced. An oral folk tradition mentions the year 893, but this is not certain. It is believed that the Lords of Rettenberg , whose seat was Rettenberg Castle , promoted the settlement of Walsers in the Gerstruben Valley. After Heinrich von Rettenberg's death around 1350, ownership passed from his widow to the von Heimenhofen brothers . These divided the property. This means that the first secure settlement comes from the deed of partition of 1361. In the same period, the Gerstruben probably submitted to the Tyrolean court in Ehrenberg , whose list of subjects from 1427 allows this to be concluded.

In the 17th century, presumably after the plague had died down in the parish of Oberstdorf, the small Marienkapelle was built in Gerstruben. The altar is from the early 18th century. In 1917, during the First World War , the bell was dismantled and used for war purposes. In 1941 an avalanche damaged the chapel.

Gerstruben was inhabited by mountain farmers all year round until 1892. It was abandoned by the inhabitants because a dam was planned to dam the Dietersbachtal for the purpose of generating energy. Gerstruben would have sunk in the reservoir. However, the project was not carried out because there were too few pantographs.

In 1896 Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim acquired the valley for hunting purposes. It is thanks to this fact that the old wooden houses have been preserved. Since 1953, the entire property has been owned by the "Oberstdorf Association of Former Lawyers" and is maintained and looked after as a museum. A historic sawmill from 1846 was also restored by the association.
