Gert from Gontard

Gert von Gontard (born August 24, 1906 in Berlin ; † September 29, 1979 in Zurich ) was a German theater director.

Career

Von Gontard was a son of the German arms manager Paul von Gontard . He studied philosophy, psychology, German and theater studies in Berlin. In 1929 he founded the literary and political newspaper Neue Revue . After the National Socialists came to power , he emigrated to the United States in early 1933. In Hollywood he was a lecturer at Max Reinhardt's Workshop for Stage, Screen and Radio from 1938 to 1941 . In 1941 he came to New York, where he founded the German-speaking emigrant ensemble Players from Abroad . He later directed at the Metropolitan Opera .
