Gertrud Knebusch worked as a saleswoman and gave birth to four children. In 1960 she moved to Straße Im Moore in Hanover and from there began her voluntary work for “her” district of Nordstadt. After she was elected to the District Council North for the SPD in 1981 (until 1991), she co-founded the Citizens School Association in 1983, which is now the district center of Nordstadt eV in the Citizens School at Klaus-Müller-Kilian-Weg 2, at the corner of Schaufelder Straße .

According to a resolution of the City Council of the City of Hanover on December 9, 1999, a first lexicon was created in the following year 2000 about important women in Hanover, after whom street names in the city were to be named. After initial naming, a compendium of Significant Women in Hanover was finally published in 2011, based on suggestions and research by Professor Luise F. Pusch and Annette Volland , according to which the women listed in the compendium should be taken into account in future street (re) naming. Gertrud Knebusch is also listed there. In November 2017, the Northern District Council decided to rename the Sandstrasse east of Weidendamm as Gertrud-Knebusch-Strasse ( location ).
