Society of Yazidi Academics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society of Ezidischer Akademikerinnen e. V. ( abbreviated GEA, Kurdish Civaka Akadêmîkarên Êzîdîyan ) is an association registered at the Essen District Court since May 13, 2013 . The GEA is a politically independent organization, which is dedicated to the scientific research of the Yezidi religion, culture and history as well as the current socio-political situation of the Yazidis in Iraq and the European diaspora . The non-profit association is based in Essen .

history

The GEA was founded during a constituent meeting on November 17, 2012 in Essen. Sefik Tagay was elected chairman of the company . Before that, the founding members were involved in an unregistered association. The GEA sees itself as an independent forum for all Yazidi academics and students in Germany and the rest of the world. Since its inception, the GEA has organized specialist scientific congresses and, through its members, has given many lectures on the Yezidi religion and community. After the genocide of the Yazidis in Iraq, which the so-called Islamic State (IS) began on August 3, 2014, GEA initiated or supported numerous aid projects to support Yezidi refugees .

Naming

When giving its name, the GEA has dispensed with the spelling "Yezidis" or, more recently, "Yazidis", which is widespread in German-speaking countries, and instead chose the spelling Ezidis because, according to the GEA, this is based on the Kurdish self-name Yezidi .

aims

A central statutory goal of the association is cross-border and interdisciplinary scientific cooperation. This is the purpose of research into Yezidism with its references to religious studies , ethnology , sociology and cultural and intellectual history. The promotion of intercultural understanding, human rights , women's and youth work as well as the cultivation of Yazidi culture and faith are of particular importance to the GEA .

activities

Scientific Conferences

In the period from June 23 to 24, 2012, GEA - as a not yet registered association - held its first international conference with the main topic "Eziden in the Diaspora: Challenges and Perspectives" in the New Town Hall in Bielefeld . The conference, in which well-known researchers from home and abroad took part, focused on questions of the political situation of the Yazidis in their countries of origin as well as the transformation processes in the diaspora.

From October 4th to 5th, 2014, the GEA, with the support of the city of Bielefeld and the Society for Threatened Peoples (GfbV), held its second international conference entitled “Eziden and Ezidentum in the transformation process: yesterday, today, tomorrow”. The symposium dealt with v. a. with the religious-historical roots of the Yezidi religion, the transformation processes in the diaspora as well as the political, humanitarian and economic consequences of the genocide committed by IS against the Yazidis in northern Iraq since August 3, 2014. At the conference, GEA awards were given to the former North Rhine -Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Schnoor and posthumously to the religious scholar and orientalist Gernot Wießner . The GEA honorary prizes honor personalities who have made outstanding contributions to Yezidism and the Yazidis.

Research activity and public relations

The head of research at the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Sefik Tagay , who was CEO of GEA from 2012 to 2016, developed the “Ezidische Identitäts-Inventory (EZI)” together with an international scientific group. With the EZI, a method for the multi-dimensional measurement of Yezidi identity is available for the first time worldwide. This research project examines how identity, migration and health are related.

In response to inquiries from various bodies such as universities, political parties, scientific societies, churches, associations and municipalities, GEA members have given numerous lectures on the Yazidi religion and community since the society was founded. With these lectures an important contribution was made to educate well-founded and competent about the Yazidis and their religion and to dispel any prejudices. The GEA is therefore often the first point of contact for science, media and politics on the subject of Yezidism.

Humanitarian action

Since the genocide of the Yazidis in Northern Iraq, the GEA has participated in numerous aid projects or managed them itself. For example, in October 2014, in cooperation with the drug aid organization “action medeor”, four and a half tons of drugs worth at least EUR 500,000 were sent to the refugees in northern Iraq. At the turn of the year 2014/2015, the GEA and the German-Kurdish aid organization "Sarmasik Efeu" initiated a delivery of high-quality baby food worth EUR 50,000 for refugee babies from Shingal and Kobane .
