Society for Archeology in Württemberg and Hohenzollern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society for Archeology in Württemberg and Hohenzollern , with around 3,050 members (as of the end of 2016), is one of the largest historical associations in Germany and an important and active interest group for the preservation of monuments .

history

On December 10, 1963, the Society for Prehistory and Early History in Württemberg and Hohenzollern (GVFG) with its headquarters in Esslingen am Neckar was founded and entered in the register of associations. The initiator and co-founder at that time was the German prehistorian Hartwig Zürn . Today's partner for the preservation of archaeological monuments emerged from the basic intention to give the state archeology more public voice. In 2007, a name change was decided at the general meeting, following the general tendency to replace the term “prehistory”, with which the broad masses can barely make anything, by “archeology”. In recent years, topics from the archeology of the Middle Ages had increasingly been taken up at social events.

Since its founding, the Society for Archeology has steadily increased in the number of its members, so that a program consisting of lectures and lecture series, conferences, colloquia, visits to exhibitions, study trips and foreign excursions, as well as teaching excavations was created.

According to its own information, the aim of the society is to promote science and research on prehistory and early history in Württemberg and Hohenzollern as well as the preservation of archaeological cultural monuments .
