In German law , the Measurement and Calibration Act lays down requirements that must be observed for measuring devices in order to comply with the state of the art in order to guarantee correct measurement results and measurements. Compliance with the requirements is assumed if the measuring device corresponds to a harmonized standard ( Section 7 ). Conformity assessment bodies assess whether a measuring device meets the requirements ( Section 13 ).

The law represents a new version of the calibration law, the gradual entry into force of which was only completed on January 1, 2015. Until then, provisions of the calibration law that had not yet been replaced remained valid.

Content of the law

The law requires that measuring devices may not be used without calibration ( Section 37 ).

It defines precise regulations for prepackages and other sales units. Provisions for consumption meters ( water meters , gas meters , electricity meters , heat meters ) are regulated in calibration regulations and the associated guidelines for carrying out these calibrations. The calibration of these consumption meters is carried out exclusively by state-approved test centers .

As a superior federal authority under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology leading Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt overseeing the metrology . The implementation or monitoring of calibrations is the responsibility of the calibration offices of the federal states.

Violations of the law are punished as administrative offenses ( Section 60 ) with fines.

Changes to the implementation of the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) came into force on February 8, 2007, and on March 12, 2011 to implement the Services Directive .

Calibration regulations

In addition to the Verification Act, the Calibration Ordinance regulates the calibration of measuring devices. It was issued on August 12, 1988. With effect from February 13, 2007 it was also adapted to the requirements of the European Measuring Instruments Directive . With effect from January 1, 2015, the calibration ordinance was replaced by the measurement and calibration ordinance .
