The Legislative Assembly of the Norfolk Island ( English Norfolk Legislative Assembly ) was on the basis of the Norfolk Island Act 1979 from 1979 to June 18, 2015 the legislature of the Norfolk Island , an Australian outer area .
history
It was established in 1979 by the Norfolk Island Act 1979 of the Australian Parliament , which granted Norfolk Island the greatest possible autonomy.
In March 2015, the Australian Parliament proposed to convert the Legislative Assembly into a Regional Parliament. This is part of the plan to integrate Norfolk Island more into Australia.
With the Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Bill 2015, which was enacted by the Australian Federal Parliament on May 14, 2015 and received the Royal Assent on May 26, 2015, the self-government of the Norfolk Island was repealed on June 30, 2016 and the island from the following 1. Subordinated to New South Wales law of July . Since then, the island has been managed by the Norfolk Island Regional Council . The affiliation with Australia is controversial among the population.
Members
The parliament has 9 members who are elected by the people for 3 years. All voters have 9 votes, which they can freely distribute. However, each candidate may only be given a maximum of 2 votes.
All candidates are independent as there are no political parties on Norfolk Island . Nevertheless there is an organization of the Australian Labor Party ( German : Australian Workers' Party).
