Hans Bauer (* May 27, 1920 ; † March 24, 1976 ) was a German local politician ( SPD ) and Lord Mayor of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate from May 1, 1970 until his death.

Act

Hans Bauer, a city administration official, was a member of the Weiden city council and also chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there. During this time he was a co-founder of the workers' welfare old people's clubs “Josef Künstler” (1963), “Karl Engelhardt” (1967) and “Stockerhut” (1969).

In 1970 he was elected to the post of Mayor of Weiden after his long-term predecessor and party comrade Hans Schelter could no longer stand up for election for reasons of age. Bauer was supposed to run for the office of mayor again in 1976, but before that he suddenly died. During his tenure, he set up the city's citizen advice center.

After Bauer's death, the SPD presented Willibald Moser as a substitute candidate, but he was unable to prevail against the CSU candidate Hans Schröpf and had even found support from former SPD mayor Schelter in his election campaign.

Honors

On December 4, 1971, Bauer received honorary membership of the EAW settler community Weiden in the Upper Palatinate. In Weiden, the cultural center in Schulgasse ( old school building ) as well as the cultural hall there and the senior citizens' home of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) in Leimbergerstraße 45 are named after him.
