Hans Schelter (born April 13, 1905 in Röthenbach ; † 1982 ) was a German local politician ( SPD ) and Lord Mayor of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate from 1952 to 1970.

Life

Schelter joined the SPD in 1923. From 1932 to 1933 he was city councilor in Arzberg and from 1946 to 1952 city councilor in Weiden. In 1932, under his chairmanship, the construction of the club's own sports field at the Free Gymnastics Association (FTA) began in Arzberg.

Schelter was directly elected to the office of Weiden's Mayor in 1952. He was in office from May 1st of that year and was confirmed in office several times. In 1970 he did not stand for election for reasons of age. April 30, 1970 was his last day in office. He was followed by his party comrade Hans Bauer .

During his tenure, Schelter made a name for himself primarily with construction projects. Several schools were built, the city received its first traffic light in 1955, the Josefshaussaal was opened in 1959, the foundation stone for the justice building was laid, the Weiden / Latsch airfield opened in 1964 and the groundbreaking ceremony for the indoor swimming pool, which opened in 1970, took place in 1967.

In 1954 he met Bonaventure Leca (1887–1973), mayor of the Paris suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux from 1953 to 1973, at a congress of the “International Mayors' Union” in Braunschweig , with whom he not only developed a close personal friendship, but also with which he initiated and intensified an intensive exchange program between the two cities, which led to the city partnership being sealed in 1962. In 1956, Weiden took over the sponsorship of the expelled German Bohemia of the home district of Tachau . On the initiative of Schelter and that of the retired Tachau school councilor Franz Präger, the Association for the Preservation of Old Cultural Property of the Tachau Region was founded on July 11, 1957 . V. founded. In 1963, Schelter sealed another town twinning with Arnaldo Marconi (1921-2008), the mayor of Macerata (Italy). Among other things, in 1970 he became chairman of the Weidener Tierschutzverein .

After the death of his successor in office Hans Bauer, Schelter publicly spoke out in the OB election campaign in 1976 for the election of the opposing candidate of the CSU Hans Schröpf , which caused him the displeasure of some party members. He was placed under police protection because of death threats . The SPD district board of Lower Bavaria / Upper Palatinate initiated party regulatory proceedings against him and his membership rights had to be suspended. Schröpf won the election with 63.5 percent of the vote, the SPD candidate Willibald Moser was defeated.

Hans Schelter had been married to Emma Buchka since 1927 and had a daughter.
