Rock magnetism

Rock magnetism is the magnetic property of rocks in the form of ferrimagnetism , paramagnetism and antiferromagnetism . The ferrimagnetic minerals include magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), titanomagnetites of the ternary mixture system Fe 2 O 3 -FeO-TiO 2 , maghemite (γ-Fe 2 O 3 ) and pyrrhotite ( magnetic gravel , FeS). Areas of application are prospecting with geophysical methods for the exploration of deposits and paleomagnetic investigations . The magnetic susceptibility is highest with basalt .
