Art Union (GDR)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The art union was a single union in the FDGB of the GDR . Artists and cultural workers from the GDR were organized in the art union.

The role of the art union in the GDR

The relationship of the FDGB to its individual unions such as the art union differed significantly from that of the DGB to its individual unions such as the art union . While the DGB is set up as a weak umbrella organization and the actual trade union work and power lies in the individual unions, the FDGB was structured centrally. There were member unions like the art union, but they did not play a major role in the union organization.

In addition to the implementation of the principle of "democratic centralism" , it was above all the different functions of unions in East and West: the main task of the union was to ensure that the plan was fulfilled. The art union was not an employee representation vis-à-vis the management, as there was no official conflict between management and workforce in the GDR. This also eliminated the need for a structure that was oriented towards the economic sectors .

history

Art and Literature Union (1946–1949)

The trade union for art, literature and the liberal professions was founded at the zone delegates' conference on June 17 and 18, 1946 in Berlin-Pankow. The union was registered on June 17, 1946 as union 17 with the preparatory committee of the FDGB. Since August 1946 it has been known as the Union of Art and Literature . At the second central delegate conference on November 26th and 27th, 1947, the technical structure of the union was determined. These divisions were: stage, film, radio (GDBA), artists ( IAL ), music (German Musicians Association), technology and administration, writers (Protection Association of German Authors), journalists (Association of the German Press) and visual arts (Protection Association of Visual Artists ). There were 7 professional associations in East Berlin; centralization took place there in 1953.

Stage-Film-Funk-Music-Artistry Union (1949 - February 1951)

In 1949 the art and literature union was split into two unions: union 17 - stage, film, artistry, music with the branches of the Cooperative of German Stage Members, International Artist Lodge, German Musicians' Association as well as technology and administration, and union 19 - art and literature with the sections Protection Association of German Authors, Protection Association of Visual Artists and Association of the German Press. In 1950 the name of the "Union 17 - Stage, Film, Artistry, Music" was changed to the Stage-Film-Funk-Music-Artistic Union .

Union of Art

At the extraordinary central delegate conference on February 20 and 21, 1951, the two unions were merged to form the art union. It was now divided into central specialist commissions for the areas of stage, film, radio, music and artistry. This structure continued until the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The SC Rotation Berlin was the sports club of the art union.

After the turn

After the fall of the Wall , a process of renewal began in the art union. The long-time chairman Herbert Bischoff had to resign in November 1989 and his deputy, Horst Singer , took over the management of the art union on a temporary basis. At the extraordinary ZDK on March 19, 1990, the art union was renamed the art, culture, media union . The new chairman was now Walfriede Schmitt .

On October 31, 1990, the IG Druck und Papier and the art, culture, media union in the FDGB of the GDR joined the IG Medien - Printing and Paper, Journalism and Art in the DGB.
