The Ghizani or Golden Back Moderlieschen ( Squalius ghigii , Syn .: Ladigesocypris ghigii , gr. Γκιζάνι) is a small carp fish and the only freshwater fish species that occurs naturally on the Greek island of Rhodes .

features

Female Ghizani reach lengths of up to 9 centimeters, males are a maximum of 6.5 centimeters long. Her dark brown-silvery back is separated from the light belly by a wide dark stripe. The sideline is incomplete and only runs through part of the 27–33 rows of scales. The mouth is terminal. The dorsal fin has three hard and seven to nine branched soft rays. The anal fin has three hard and eight to nine soft rays.

Occurrence

The species is endemic to Rhodes and inhabits almost all fresh waters on the island. It prefers springs and slowly flowing areas near the shore, where it can hide between stones, roots and aquatic plants.

Way of life

Ghizani feed on insect larvae and algae. They reproduce from February to June, depending on the conditions found in the populated body of water. The yellowish, 1.3 millimeter diameter eggs are laid on algae and the larvae hatch after four days. Sexual maturity is reached at one year and the maximum age is three years. During the dry season in summer, a large number of adults and young animals regularly die, so that the population fluctuates greatly.

Threat and protection

The species is threatened by the destruction of its habitats and the abstraction of water from the waters it inhabits. However, local protective measures have stabilized the populations. In the Red List of the IUCN will be at risk (vulnerable) out.

The Ghizani is listed as a priority species by the European Union in Annex II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore considered a species of community interest, for whose preservation special protected areas must be designated by the member states. There is an EU LIFE program to protect species.
