Ghost is a free blogging platform written in JavaScript and running under Node.js. It is minimalist and aims to provide a system for writing and publishing articles that does not distract bloggers from other things.

The project started by the two software developers John O'Nolan and Hannah Wolfe was supported on Kickstarter within 29 days with almost 200,000 British pounds , although the original goal was only 25,000. After the successful start, as already announced on the Kickstarter page, the Ghost Foundation was founded as a non-profit, non-profit organization , which from now on takes care of the further development of Ghost. The software can be downloaded and installed for free from GitHub .

editor

In line with the minimalist basic idea behind Ghost, the post editor is also structured as simply as possible. In contrast to other well-known weblog software and content management systems such as B. WordPress , Ghost does not have a visual WYSIWYG editor, but instead builds on the Markdown language with which the texts can be formatted . Formatting buttons are also deliberately omitted in order not to have to interrupt typing by clicking buttons .

Themes

As with other modern CMS , the look of Ghost can be customized with themes . Handlebars are used as template language for this purpose, with which variables can be easily inserted into the HTML code output and associated control structures can be implemented by the developers.

The Ghost Foundation provides an official marketplace for the themes, on which both free and paid themes are listed. The themes listed show a preview image that is linked to a user-specific website on which the theme can be downloaded or purchased. As the official launch partner of Ghost, Envato also has a range that currently (as of January 2017) includes 208 different themes.
