    Giana's Return is a technology developed by fans continued to jump-'n'-Run - Computer game classic The Great Giana Sisters . The video game was developed by the German-Austrian-French Gianas Return team, who founded the indie game studio Retroguru in 2011 , and has been available for free download on a website since 2009.

    History of origin

    The project started in 1998. The developer Rainer Sinsch (Myth) presented the Giana remake Giana 32K (7 levels) at the Mekka & Symposium , a game developer competition in Fallingbostel , in the 32K Competition category took first place. Here he came into contact with the later head of the Giana's Return project Shahzad Sahaib (coyote).

    Together with other team members, they developed "The Great Giana Worlds", a Windows version with DirectX support, which was presented at Evoke in 1999 and which became known abruptly thanks to its co-publications on various computer magazine CDs. This called the rights holder of the Giana games and co-developer of The Great Giana Sisters Armin Gessert on the scene and he threatened the team with a lawsuit. After the project was renamed "Giant Worlds", Gessert dropped the lawsuit. Myth nevertheless declined further involvement in the project.

    Since level designer Coyote was unable to fit many of his designs into the game, he put together a new team. The new team with the recruited coder CHN started the development of Giana's Return at the end of 2001. In 2004, an early beta version of the game was completed. But then the programmer of the project disappeared without a trace. He hadn't even left the source code for the game to the team.

    Despite this, Coyote soon reunited the team after finding a new programmer in Rodolphe Boixel (Thor). A complete restart of the project began in 2004 until the game was on the brink again in 2008. The rights holder Spellbound (now founded as Black Forest Games ) planned to release the official remake in 2009: Giana Sisters DS . After making contact again, Gessert tolerated the further development, as did Manfred Trenz and Chris Hülsbeck . The developer group committed itself not to pursue any commercial goals with the game and not to bring out any porting for Nintendo DS or iPhone in order not to compete with Spellbound's product.

    Since various graphic designers suddenly jumped off the project, the release of version 0.99 was delayed until it was presented on the Swiss Buenzli 18 on August 15, 2009. Version 1.0 was released in 2011, v1.1 in 2014.

    Technical specifications

    The game is presented in 2D pixel graphics and the chip music , which changes every four levels, is reminiscent of Hülsbeck's templates. The game is available in versions for many different operating systems and consoles . There are a total of 23 ports also for exotics such as the Linux handheld Pandora or various Amiga systems . Before starting the game, the English, German, French or Spanish language version can be selected. Armin Gessert, who died in 2009, is honored in the opening credits .

    Game flow

    Giana's Return should possibly be the implementation of the Giana clone planned by Rainbow Arts for Super Mario World . In any case, the game is divided into seven different settings , each with eight levels. This is followed by the fight against the boss of the setting and the change of the landscape theme in a separate arena . In addition, the player can find numerous bonus caves and warp zones : the latter in levels 7, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 29, 33, 40, 47, 51 and 54. Thus, the game is a lot more extensive than the original .

    The game is a classic platformer, side scroller and platformer. Most of the opponents are known from Giana 1. Giana can flatten it by jumping on her head or shoot it after picking up well-known items. The last boss can only be defeated by taking in all the available rubies of the levels.

    Unlike Giana 1, Giana has five hit points . Spikes, falling into an abyss, some opponents and the bosses lead directly to the loss of a life in Giana's normal state. Completing a level leads to the regeneration of one, collecting a hundred rubies to the restoration of two hit points. The latter gives Giana an extra life. As in the original, Giana has three lives. However, if these are used up, the player starts over at the beginning of the same level. In addition, the levels can be accessed directly using a classic password system or the trainer hidden in level 1. The game was further simplified in version 0.995 by inserting checkpoints and reducing the bosses' life points.

    One night Giana dreams of the magical land in which she was once trapped and which she could only escape with a magical ruby. Her sister Maria, who was trapped there, calls her back and Giana sets out on a journey to free Maria and Rubin from the clutches of the monster Swampy. As on the cover of Giana 1, the provocatively clad woman in the cut scenes are a stark contrast to the story of the little girl Giana.
