the Ultimate Meeting ( tUM for short ) is an annual, three-day event of the European demo scene culture in Germany , usually referred to as a “ demo party ” for short . The focus is on meeting those interested in the demo scene and exchanging experiences with one another. The high point are the computer art competitions (scene-language competitions or compos for short ), in which programmers, graphic artists and musicians compete against each other in front of the audience, often with their works, which are often only completed on site. In contrast to LAN parties , which are also characterized by the use of computers, playing at demo parties and especially at tUM is undesirable.

In addition to the four times as much attended revision (formerly Breakpoint ) and the almost twice as large Evoke in Cologne, the tUM in southwest Germany is the third German demo party that has been able to establish itself as an integral part of the European demo scene culture. The tUM is seen as an alternative to the Danish The Party , which was also held annually between Christmas and New Year from 1991 to 2002. In 2014 the organizers announced that that year would be paused. At the same time it was announced that the AttentionWhore (ATW) group would be holding a replacement party (“Under Construction”) on the occasion of its five-year existence, in which many of the tUM organizers are involved.

history

The party started in 1999 as a gathering of only 35 demo scenes in an old industrial hall. After a two-year hiatus, however, it has grown continuously since 2002. In 1999 and 2002 tUM took place in Mannheim, 2003 and 2004 in the Hans-Michel-Halle in Hemsbach and since 2005 in the Festhalle Durlach . With around 200 to 250 visitors, the third largest event of its kind in Germany, well-known groups and international guests come here with very good and serious contributions. The best individual contributions shown for the first time at tUM are also regularly nominated for the Scene.org Award .

The CMS PartyMeister developed for the organization of the tUM is now used for other demo parties , including a. Breakpoint and revision as well as demodays (formerly Buenzli).

The sponsors of the event have so far included United Internet , Dreamcast-Scene and Digitale Kultur e. V.

In contrast to most other demo parties of this size, which are mainly limited to the PC (or specialize in a certain system), besides the usual competitions, there are still C64 competitions with extensive participation at tUM.

While at other demo parties players are not very welcome, but often tolerated, the organizers of the tUM explicitly point out that typical LAN party visitors who are not interested in the demo scene are undesirable.

Keyboard and mouse e. V.

Since 2007, the event is organized by the organization formed for this purpose registered association keyboard and mouse organized. In addition to organizing its own demo party, the association has set itself the goal of promoting the demo scene in general. The focus is on activities in Germany taking into account an international target group. In addition, the association also supports other events in the demo scene, such as the Demodays in Olten (Switzerland), the Breakpoint in Bingen and later the revision in Saarbrücken.

In 2008, the association awarded a jury prize of € 350 for the first time to an individual or a group within the demo scene who had particularly distinguished themselves with a production at the tUM. The recipient of this award was determined at the tUM by an independent jury made up of members of the demo scene.
