Giannalberto Bendazzi (born July 17, 1946 in Ravenna ; † December 13, 2021 ) was an Italian film historian and author who mainly dealt with the history of animated films .

Life

Bendazzi studied law at the University of Milan and graduated with a thesis on copyright in the field of audiovisual works .

He started his career as a journalist. At the same time, he has been working on the history of animated film since the mid-1960s.

In 1982, Bendazzi co-founded ASIFA-Italy, the Italian section of the Association internationale du film d'animation . From 1982 to 1991 he was a member of the international board of directors of ASIFA. From the end of the 1990s, Bendazzi focused on film studies research. He taught as a professor at the University of Milan (2002–2009) and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (2013–2015).

Giannalberto Bendazzi has published numerous articles on film studies and non-fiction books, including biographies by Mel Brooks , Quirino Cristiani , Woody Allen and Alexandre Alexeieff as well as the film studies overview works Cartoons: 100 Years of Cinema Animation and the three-volume Animation: A World History .
