Crescent - A Cthulhu Adventure is a point-and-click - Adventure , which the Romanian developer Stuck In Attic for Windows , MacOS and Linux has been developed and published. It was released in August 2019 on the digital distribution platforms Steam and GOG .

action

Detective Don R. Ketype is tasked with finding and bringing back the Necronomicon, which is said to be in the miskatonic library in Darkham. However, things are not going quite according to plan. Don is kidnapped by a strange cult and the librarian, Buzz Kerwan, stumbles upon the evil book himself. After accidentally making his cat Kitteh speak by casting a spell from the book, he sets out to reverse the effects. In the course of the game, the three protagonists work together and travel to different locations to solve the secrets of the Necronomicon and the various cults.

  • Kitteh (voiced by Lindsay Peck)
She is Buzz's cat, and now speaks after casting a spell from the Necronomicon. She is very cynical and sarcastic, but still helps Buzz when he needs help.

Game principle and technology

The player takes control of one of three protagonists in each of the seven chapters. To advance, the player must collect items and talk to other characters to solve puzzles. When playing as Buzz Kerwan, the player can use his cat Kitteh to solve certain puzzles or ask her for advice on what works as the hint system in the game. If the player is playing ketype as Don R., he can find clues in his diary. Some key scenes in the game are presented as animated cutscenes that can be viewed again from the main menu. The player can also highlight or zoom in on all hotspots in each scene at the touch of a button.

Production notes

The game was developed by a small team of three members from Târgu Mureș , Transylvania , Romania . In 2016 the game was funded through a crowdfunding campaign at Kickstarter.com . The target of 39,270 CHF was exceeded and a total of 53,862 CHF was achieved by almost 2,000 backers. The game is inspired by the Cthulhu myth of American writer HP Lovecraft and LucasArts games from the 90s, while the graphic style was inspired by Disney films and Studio Ghibli works. It was translated into 12 languages ​​that were already available for publication; the German translation is by Marcel Weyers. The game also has over 70 English-speaking voice actors for dubbing the game, including Doug Cockle and Amber Lee Connors.

It was released on Steam and GOG in August 2019.

Soundtrack

The "Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure Original Soundtrack" was composed by Liviu Boar and Cami Cuibus. The soundtrack was recorded with live instruments and contains 27 tracks with a total of two hours and nine minutes of original music and is available in MP3 and FLAC format. A copy of the soundtrack is included in the deluxe version of the game.

Teodor Nechita from Softpedia gave 4 out of 5 stars and compared the atmosphere of the game to Tim Burton . The review said, “All in all, Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure is a game that no self-proclaimed point-and-click fan should miss as it will definitely find a place in your game library, comedy movie collection and ultimately your heart becomes."

Joe Keeley from Adventure Gamers gave 3 out of 5 stars, praising the graphic design and animation, the sense of humor, the synchronization of two of the three main characters and the puzzles, but criticized the tangled story, the sometimes unnatural dialogue, the scratchy voice of the third Main character and those of a few minor characters and the unsatisfactory ending. He said, "Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure looks amazing and will make you laugh, but its inability to tell a cohesive story prevents this cosmic horror adventure from achieving its full potential."
