Gideon Mer
Gideon Mer (born 1894 in Panevėžys , Kaunas Governorate ; died March 22, 1961 in Rosh Pina , Israel ) was an Israeli scientist of Lithuanian-Russian origin who was mainly active in the field of malaria research . He was the father of Arna Mer-Chamis and the grandfather of Juliano Mer-Khamis .
biography
Gideon Mer was born in Lithuania , then part of the Russian Empire . He studied medicine in Russia and France and emigrated to Palestine in 1914 . During the First World War he was a medic in the Jewish Legion , a battalion of the Royal Fusiliers of the British Army and was stationed in Gallipoli, Palestine, Syria and Turkey. After the First World War he moved to Rosh Pina in the Upper Galilee . The laboratory he set up there quickly became an important research station for mosquito (mosquito) and malaria research . After founding the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , he became Professor of Disease Prevention .
During the Second World War , Mer served in the British Army as a malaria consultant. After the war he became a member of the new medical faculty and chief advisor to the Ministry of Health. He headed this ministry as director from 1956–1957.
After malaria in Israel was largely brought under control, especially through the work and knowledge of Prof. Mer, he devoted himself to the control and extinction of other insects, including horseflies . To this end, scientists were trained in the research station in Rosh Pina and insecticides were tested.
