The genus of the poisonous tree frogs ( Trachycephalus; synonym of some species: Phrynohyas ), also known as toad tree frogs or armored tree frogs, belongs to the family of tree frogs (Hylidae) within the order of the frogs (Anura) .

They are relatively large tree frogs (sometimes over 10 cm head-trunk length) with noticeably thick skin, which is permeated by many mucous and poison glands and can therefore appear comparatively "warty". The males have paired sound bladders that attach behind the corners of the jaw. Poisonous tree frogs lay their eggs in water-filled tree holes ( phytotelms ) or large leaves.

Their distribution extends from Mexico through Central America to central South America, so in the flatlands east of the Andes to northern Argentina and eastern Brazil .
