The tree cave toad tree frog ( Trachycephalus resinifictrix , syn .: Phrynohyas resinifictrix ) belongs to the family of tree frogs (Hylidae) within the order of the frogs (Anura ). Some species of the current genus Trachycephalus were led under the name Phrynohyas until a comprehensive revision of the family Hylidae in 2005 .
description
The nocturnal tree-cave toad tree frog reaches a size of up to 8 centimeters. Its basic dark brown color is interspersed with white transverse bands, spots and dots. The belly side is cream-colored, which shimmers bluish towards the flanks. The feet with the adhesive discs, with which they hold on to leaves and branches, are also brown in color and have a bluish shimmer. The glandular warts ( parotids ) on the back secrete a sticky skin secretion that is used to ward off predators. Because of their very large vocal sacs , males are able to make extremely loud sounds.
Spread, way of life
The distribution area extends over the entire Amazon region . The species is particularly widespread in Brazil , Venezuela , Colombia and east of the Andes . It lives exclusively on trees. The animals also lay their spawn here. To do this, they use leaves and calyxes filled with water.
In addition to insects , adult tree-hollow toad tree frogs eat everything that small animals can overwhelm them. Tadpoles live mainly on algae , detritus and spawn .
The pairing is not tied to any fixed season. During the rainy season, females lay up to 3000 eggs in several batches in hollow trees, so-called phytotelms . The tadpoles hatch after just one day and feed on the unfertilized eggs in the clutch . They still have external gills during the first phase of life . The metamorphosis to the young frog is complete after around three weeks . Like the adult tree-cave toad tree frogs, young frogs have the same basic coloration, which is a bit more contrasting.
