Giant tomb of Moru
The giant tomb of Moru, excavated in 1988, is located in Arzachena in Gallura in the province of Sassari in Sardinia , just a few hundred meters from the Albucciu dolmen . The buildings named in Sardu Tumbas de sos zigantes and in Italian (plur.) Tombe dei Giganti are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . Most of the 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), the forerunner of the nuragic culture .
Type sequence
Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and monolithic exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists instead of monolithic blocks, of a square facade, clearly raised in the middle, made of processed and layered stone blocks.
description
The giant grave of Moru, deprived of all stones of its only slightly vaulted exedra , cannot be classified unequivocally with regard to its type. The system, recognizable by the curbs, is 11.3 m long and 5.2 m wide. The 9.1 m long and two meters wide chamber consists of a rectangular corridor and very thick, obviously worked walls made of around 18 differently sized bearing stones. This model, the so-called “Allée couverte”, probably dates from the later Bronze Age (1300–1100 BC) Only a slightly offset plate has been preserved from the cover of the chamber. Two stones in the access area narrow the entrance and also point to a rectangular facade.
