Giant tomb of Pascaredda

The giant tomb of Pascaredda (also Pascareddha ) is located southwest of Calangianus in the province of Sassari in Sardinia . The buildings called Tumbas de sos zigantes in Sardinian and Tombe dei Giganti in Italian (plur.) Are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), the forerunner of the nuragic culture .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles are the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a rectangular façade made of processed and horizontally layered stone blocks, instead of vertically positioned orthostats . The giant grave of Pascaredda is a complex of the older type (with portal stele) and a very wide exedra. The excavation and restoration of the monument was carried out by Angela Antona in 1998.

description

The approximately semicircular 18.4 m wide exedra is formed from orthostats that decrease in height towards the sides. In the center, the lower part of the portal stele is in situ while the upper part (here either a separate attached or never-existent) upper part is missing. The unusually wide, 2.1 m high portal slab shows the usual frame relief and the entrance in the middle. The chamber is rectangular (length 12.5 m, width 0.9 m at the base, height 0.9 m). The rectangular apse and the side walls protrude slightly and consist of irregular granite blocks arranged in rows . The ceiling consists of lintels of which 12 panels have been preserved.

Nearby is the well-preserved Protonuraghe Agnu and 200 m away is the Li Paladini spring sanctuary .
