Gilbert John Fowler

Gilbert John Fowler (born January 23, 1868 in Paris , † March 21, 1953 in Bangalore ) was a British chemist.

He attended school in Sommerset and studied at Owens College in Manchester. From 1888 to 1896 he was a demonstrator at the chemical laboratory and from 1892 he was also an assistant lecturer for metallurgy at Owen's College. He received the Dalton Prize for his early research on metallurgy. In 1904 he received his D.Sc. and became a lecturer in sanitary chemistry at the Public Health Department. In 1912 he became a lecturer in bacteriological chemistry and director of the Frankland laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Manchester . In 1916 he became a professor of applied chemistry. From 1919 to 1924 he was Professor of Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore . In 1926 he became director of the Government Technological Institute and the following year principal of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur . He was also a consultant, 1896-1914 in England, 1916-25 in India and 1918-22 in China. In 1929 he retired in Bangalore.

He was a founding member of the Natural Institute of Science India.
