Gilberto de Almeida Rêgo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilberto Leonel de Almeida Rêgo (born February 21, 1881 in Irará , Brazil , † October 21, 1961 ) was a Brazilian football referee .

He was used at the first soccer World Cup in 1930 and directed a total of three games. He was noticed by several curious and controversial decisions. So he whistled the preliminary round game Argentina against France several minutes too early. This also happened immediately before the completion of a great chance for Frenchman Marcel Langiller , which might have equalized the 1-1 draw in this game. In the semi-final game of the World Cup host Uruguay against Yugoslavia, which had previously caused the national team of his home country to be eliminated from the tournament, he initially did not recognize the Yugoslavs goal for a potential 2-0 lead due to alleged offside position. He then overlooked the fact that the game device had already been clearly out of the gate before Uruguay's equalizer and was only brought back into the five-meter area by a police officer posted there. De Almeida Rêgo was 49 years old at the time of the tournament, making it the oldest active participant in this World Cup.
