Life

Gilbertus Anglicus studied in England. It is believed that he also studied in Salerno , possibly even with Roger of Parma . At the school of Montpellier he worked as chancellor.

Work and reception

In his seven-part work Compendium medicinae (also known as Lilium or Laurea medicinae as well as Laurea anglicana and Gilbertina ), composed between 1230 and 1240, Gilbertus, who was also active as papal personal physician, placed astonishing importance on surgical questions, although medicine and surgery were still quite strict in his time were separated.

Large parts of the compendium can be found in the German-language “Pharmacopoeia” of Ortolf von Baierland .
