Gilles Boileau (born October 22, 1631 in Paris , † March 10, 1669 ibid) was a French translator and member of the Académie française . He was the brother of Nicolas Boileau .

life and work

Gilles Boileau, now forgotten, was the five years older brother of the famous Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. He was a lawyer at the Parlement , rent master of the town hall and shortly before his untimely death at court he held the official office of a controller of table silver.

Boileau distinguished himself from 1653 with translations from ancient Greek and with occasional poetry and was appointed to the Académie française in 1659 (his brother only 25 years later). His inaugural address is lost. As a controversial contemporary, he directed a polemic against Gilles Ménage and his friends Paul Pellisson , Paul Scarron and Madeleine de Scudéry in 1655 . He was supported by Valentin Conrart and Jean Chapelain . When his brother Nicolas attacked Chapelain in a satire in 1659, it led to a falling out between the brothers, who disparaged each other in excessive language. Entry into the academy was also competitive. His death at the age of 37 paved the way for his brother's social advancement in 1669.
