Cologne and its neighboring districts (borders to Gillgau (left edge of the map) are unclear; Keldachgau is shown incorrectly)

The Gillgau (or Gilgau ) was a medieval Frankish Gaugrafschaft the Lower Rhine .

The Gillgau is the area northwest of Cologne between the Rhine and Erft . The Gillgau is derived from the Gillbach , which gave this Gau its name. It bordered on the Nievenheimer Gau or Neusser Gau and belonged to them in the early Middle Ages (around 800).

In the past, the Gillgau was wrongly equated by Wirtz (1913/14) with the Keldachgau , also on the left bank of the Rhine, but further north , actually Gilde- or Keldagau. Ewig (1954), Rotthoff (1974) and Nonn (1983) contradicted this .
