Gillsby mossar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gillsby mossar is a wetland on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea . The area is designated as a Natura 2000 area .

The area, located in the northern part of the island, northwest of the village of Gillsby , is divided into the three swamp areas: Norra moss , Bärsmossen and Stenkärret .

The largest of the three swamps is the slowly silting Norra Mossen in the south of the area. The previously prevalent stiff sedge is gradually being replaced by reeds and rush edges. To the west is Stenkärret, for which the stiff sedge is typical. In the north is the lime-rich Bärsmossen swamp. The rush edge dominates here again.

Compared to other wetlands in Öland, Gillsby mossar is extensive and relatively little affected by human action. Cranes and Montagu's Harriers breed in the wetland, which is varied due to the presence of several islands . With the help of renaturation measures , an attempt is being made to make the Black Tern , which used to be very numerous here , at home again in the area.
