Giora Eiland (* 1952 in Moschaw Kfar Hess , Israel ) is a former major general of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He was Israel's National Security Advisor and is a Senior Research Associate at the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies.

Military career

Eiland joined the Israeli army in 1970 and initially served in the 890 Paratrooper Battalion . As an officer, he took part in the 1973 Yom Kippur War , in 1976 in the operation to free the hostages in Entebbe and in the military campaigns in Lebanon in Operation Litani in 1978 and in the Lebanon War in 1982 .

After the war in 1982, Eiland initially worked in officer training. After training in the USA, he worked in the Infantry Operations Directorate, a planning staff. From 1990 to 1993, Eiland commanded the Defense Forces Officers School and the Giv'ati Brigade . In 1999 he became the commander of the Operations Directorate with the rank of brigadier general . In this role he was responsible for planning the unilateral military withdrawal of the IDF from Lebanon in 2000, as well as for planning operations to combat the so-called Second Intifada . In 2001 he took over the so-called "Planning Directorate" of the IDF, which he headed until the end of his active service in 2003.

In 2004, Eiland was named chairman of the Israeli National Security Council by Ariel Sharon . In this capacity, he coordinated the plans for Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Because he, like his predecessors, was disappointed by the lack of opportunities to influence Israeli politics, he submitted his resignation in 2006 and was replaced by the former deputy head of the Mossad , Ilan Mitzrahi .

In 2010, Eiland headed the Israeli commission investigating the Ship-to-Gaza incident .

On August 5, 2014, Eiland justified the Israeli army's crackdown on the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip during the Gaza conflict in 2014 in an article for the Israeli portal ynetnews . At the same time, he criticized the official Israeli stance of only fighting against Hamas and at the same time, for example, allowing humanitarian aid deliveries to the Palestinian population. In his opinion, war should have been declared on the Palestinian state and more extensive action should have been taken against civilian goals. Military strikes against the civilian population are permissible because they voted for Hamas. In this context, Eiland compared the Israeli action with the action of the Allies against the German civilian population during the Second World War.
