Giorgio Cencetti
Giorgio Cencetti (born January 30, 1908 in Rome ; † June 13, 1970 ibid.) Was an Italian palaeographer and archivist .
Cencetti first studied law before enrolling at the Facoltà di Lettere in Rome in 1929. His teacher there was Vincenzo Federici . Initially archivist at the Archivio di Stato di Bologna (since January 1, 1933), later its director, he completed his habilitation in 1940 in paleography and diplomatics in Bologna and in 1951 took over the chair for palaeography and diplomatics at the university there, where he had been since 1944 Had a teaching position. In 1959 he received a call to Rome. From 1966 until his death in 1970 he was director of the Scuola Speciale per Archivisti e Bibliotecari at the Università di Roma . Alessandro Pratesi became his successor .
Giorgio Cencetti is best known as a paleographer with his works Lineamenti di storia della scrittura latina and Vecchi e nuovi orientamenti nello studio di paleografia . His concept of canonization and calligraphic condensation is groundbreaking, which Bernhard Bischoff took up and which fundamentally changed the understanding of the development of the Latin script in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
