Giosafat Barbaro

Giosafat Barbaro (* 1413 in Venice , † 1494 Venice) was a Venetian merchant and traveler from the Barbaro family .

Life

In 1436 Barbaro set out for the port cities on the Black Sea and then visited Russia , Georgia and the Caucasus . When he returned to Venice in 1451, he took over several offices of the republic and in 1473 was sent as envoy to Uzun Hasan , the Shah of Persia, in order to conclude an alliance with him against the Ottoman Turks . After a long journey through Persia , during which he got to know its customs and languages, he returned in 1477.

Barbaro left a manuscript with a travelogue, which was published in 1543 under the title Viaggi fatti de Venetia .
