Giouchtas ( Greek Γιούχτας or Γιούκτας), alternative transcriptions Jouchtas , Juchtas or Iouktas , is a mountain range on the Greek island of Crete .
description
The Giouchtas has a north-south extension of about five kilometers and a west-east width of about one kilometer. It has three peaks. The northern peak, the Psili Korfi , is the highest at 811 meters. The middle peak, the Afendis Christos , is about 800 meters high and the southern peak is the lowest at 743 meters. There is a transmitter on the Psili Korfi. A Minoan mountain sanctuary was also discovered there. On the Afendis Christos stands the four-aisled church Afendis Christos Metamorfosis.
The Giouchtas drops steeply to the west and south and can therefore only be climbed from the north and east. A road leads from the southeast to the middle summit. A 400 meter long footpath leads from this road to the Psili Korfi.
Surroundings
To the east at the foot of the Giouchtas is the place Archanes . Below the Psili Korfi, about 720 meters above sea level, lies the Chosto Nero cave. Further north is the Stravomytis Cave and at the northern foot is the Minoan sanctuary of Anemospilia . Below the Afendis Christos are the ruins of the Sotiras Christos monastery . The Sylaniamo Gorge runs northeast of the Giouchtas and the Giofyros River flows to the west.
Lore
In ancient times, the Cretans believed that the god Zeus was buried on the Giouchtas . An indication of this should be the shape of the mountains, which when viewed from the north looks like the head of the sleeping Zeus. The other Greeks, who believed in the immortality of the gods, therefore belied them. The name Giouchtas is said to be derived from Jupiter , the Latin name of Zeus.
natural reserve
There is a colony of griffon vultures on the Giouchtas . It was therefore included in Natura 2000 as a habitat and bird sanctuary .
