Giovanna José Blanco Bazon (born December 18, 1982 in El Tigre ) is a former Venezuelan judoka .

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Giovanna Blanco fought in the heavyweight and open classes. In 2000 she won a bronze medal in both weight classes at the South American Championships. At the Pan American Championships in the same year she won bronze in the heavyweight division. In 2001 she won the Caribbean heavyweight championships. In 2002 she won the South American Championships in both weight classes, at the Pan American Championships she won silver in the open class and took fifth place in the heavyweight division. In 2003 the Pan American Games took place in Santo Domingo. Giovanna Blanco was defeated in the heavyweight final by the Cuban Daima Beltrán . A month later, Blanco finished seventh in the open class at the World Championships in Osaka . In 2004 she won the Pan American Championships in both weight classes. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she lost to Daima Beltrán in the quarter-finals and ultimately finished seventh.

Giovanna Blanco also finished seventh in the heavyweight division at the 2005 World Championships in Cairo. At the Pan American Championships in 2006 she won the open class and took second place in the heavyweight division behind the Cuban Ibis Dueñas . In 2007 Blanco finished fifth in the heavyweight division at both the Pan American Championships and the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro . In 2008 she won silver at the Pan American Championships behind the Cuban Idalys Ortíz .

After a break, Giovanna Blanco returned in 2010. At the South American Games in Medellin in March, she won the open class and finished second in the heavyweight division behind Carmen Chala from Ecuador. Three weeks later, she finished fifth in both weight classes at the Pan American Championships. At the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez , she won bronze in both weight classes after losing in the group stage in both weight classes to both Melissa Mujica from Puerto Rico and Vanessa Zambotti from Mexico.

From 2011 Blanco only appeared in the heavyweight division. In 2011 she won the South American Championships and finished fifth at the Pan American Championships and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara . In 2012 she lost to the Japanese Mika Sugimoto in her opening match at the Olympic Games in London . Giovanna Blanco won her last international medal when she lost to Rochele Nunes from Brazil in the final of the South American Championships in March 2013 .
