Giovanni Balestra

Giovanni Battista Balestra (* 1774 in Bassano del Grappa , † 1842 in Rome ) was an Italian engraver .

Life

Balestra was a relative of the history painter Antonio Balestra . After his first artistic training in the family, he became a student of Antonio Suntach . As a student, Balestra also attended the Calcografia Remondini in his hometown.

At the age of 29 Balestra went to Rome in 1803 and settled there. As a copyist of old masters, he quickly specialized in the works of Raphael . Balestra was also known for his copperplate engravings of the works of Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorwaldsen . He also cut after drawings and designs by Paolo Veronese , Sassoferrato or Barbieri, called Guercino .

Giovanni Balestra died in Rome in 1842 at the age of 68.
