Giovanni Basso (priest)

Giovanni Angelo Basso (* May 1552 in Airolo ; † October 13, 1629 in Biasca ) was a priest, canon, pastor and archbishop vicar for Leventina .

Life

Giovanni Angelo Basso was the son of the soldier Giovanni Basso. Thanks to the intercession of Charles Borromeo , he attended the boys' seminary in Arona and the seminary in Milan , and in 1576 he was ordained a priest. In 1582 he joined the Oblate Congregation of Sant'Ambrogio. In 1584 he was the bishop's visitor to the three Ambrosian valleys; from 1585 to 1629 he was provost of Biasca. As an assistant to Charles Borromeo, he continued his reform activities in accordance with the Council of Trent in the three Ambrosian valleys.

He was apostolic commissioner and member of the delegation at the visitation of the diocese of Chur . He was the first administrator and rector of the seminary of Pollegio . He died on October 13, 1629 as a victim of his efforts for the plague sufferers .
