Giovanni Battista Bonuses

Giovanni Battista Boni (* in Cortona ; † 1641 in Rome ) was an Italian harpsichord and organ builder .

Life

Giovanni Battista Boni was born in Cortona. He went to Rome and worked for Pope Urban VIII and his nephews Cardinal Francesco Barberini , Don Taddeo Barberini and Cardinal Antonio Barberini . He built harpsichords and organs, but he also repaired the instruments and looked after the collections. Seven of his harpsichords are known.

After his death in 1641, his apprentice Girolamo Zenti took over the workshop.

Preserved instruments

Seven instruments were signed by him or are directly attributed to him, four of which are still in their original condition. These were all made in 1619. One is owned by the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, one in the Brussels Museum of Musical Instruments , one privately owned in Bristol and one in the Miami Dade County Museum of Art and Design.

Two virginals with his signature are in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC The instrument from 1602 was made by himself, while the instrument from 1617 was probably built by Stefano Bolcioni .
