Giovanni Battista Castaldo

Giovanni Battista Castaldo (* 1493 in Nocera de 'Pagani , † January 6, 1563 in Milan ) was an Italian condottiere and general .

Castaldo had risen to serve in the Imperial Army. In various military conflicts he was in the service of Emperor Charles V . In 1551 he was sent to Transylvania as a military leader of King Ferdinand in the fight against the Ottoman Empire under Suleyman I. After the imperial troops under General Castaldo invaded Transylvania, the Ottomans reacted with raids on the Banat . In December 1551 Castaldo arranged the assassination of the Transylvanian Cardinal Georg Martinuzzi .
