Giovanni Battista Mascolo (born June 14 or June 24, 1583 in Naples ; † July 20, 1656 there ) was a Jesuit and professor of philosophy.

His father wanted Giovanni Battista Mascolo as his older brother Alfonso jurisprudence studied. However, the fifteen year old joined the Jesuits in 1598 . Here, in addition to his rhetorical and exegetical skills, he primarily developed his lyrical talent. He taught rhetoric, exegesis and Hebrew literature for 17 years as a professor with the Jesuits . The plague of the year 1656/66 fell Giovanni Battista Mascolo victim.

In addition to his lyrical works, he published a calendar of saints for each day of the year. As a contemporary, he described the eruption of Vesuvius on December 16, 1631 in his work De incendio Vesuvii XVII Cal. Jan. 1631 from 1633. If 19th century authors valued the largely forgotten Jesuit as a poet at best, he is considered in the 21st century. Century primarily chronology critics as key witnesses. Today they link extensive speculations to his description of the Vesuvius eruption of 1631, as they would like to infer from the work that ancient Pompeii did not perish until this year, but until then had existed as the last flourishing Renaissance town in southern Italy. Nonetheless, Giovanni Battista Mascolo describes neither Pompeii nor Herculaneum as cities that have existed since antiquity and were only affected by the eruption in 1631, but instead cites the destruction of both in the Chronologia chapter as antiquity , referring the event to the year 81 instead of the year 79 as is usual today Dated AD. Contrary to the attempt of the chronology critics to collect it as the only testimony, there are many testimonies from the eruptions of the years 512, 685, 993, 1036, 1139, 1500. With the outbreak of 1631, the number rose to almost 100 of the sources otherwise not evaluated by chronology critics .
