Giovanni Capurro (born February 5, 1859 in Naples , † January 18, 1920 ibid) was an Italian writer and the author of the text for the song 'O sole mio .

Capurro's father Antonio worked as a language teacher; at the father's request, Giovanni first turned to technical studies, but then obtained a flute diploma at the Naples Conservatory . He subsequently became a journalist for the socialist magazine La Montagna, and also wrote for the periodical Don Marzio and the newspaper Roma. There he was accepted as an employee in 1896. Capurro was a respected poet and playwright. In 1898 Capurro wrote the words for O Sole Mio! and asked Eduardo Di Capua to put them to music. The song won second place at the Festa di Piedigrotta competition in 1898, but soon became world famous.

Capurro hardly benefited from its world success. He continued to work for the Roma newspaper as a reporter, theater critic and administrative officer, but also appeared as a singer and solo entertainer .
