Giovanni Durando

Giovanni Durando (born June 23, 1804 in Mondovì ; † May 27, 1869 in Florence ) was an Italian lieutenant general and brother of Giacomo Durando and Marcantonio Durando .

He fought for the liberal cause in Portugal and Spain from 1833–42 and commanded the papal troops in 1848. He defied the orders of Pope Pius IX in Italy's first war of independence . to neutrality and occupied the city of Vicenza with the papal corps in order to block the rear connections of the Austrians . On June 9, 1848, the bulk of the imperial army marched from Verona to Vicenza under Radetzky , took the city into his hands and forced Durando's troops to surrender on June 10. The Pope had already forbidden further fighting against Austria.

In the Sardinian War (1859) he led one of the five divisions of the Kingdom of Sardinia in the battle of Solferino .

His brother Giacomo Durando was also a general and in 1862 became foreign minister in the Rattazzi cabinet (from March to December 1862). In June 1866 Giovanni fought as commanding general of the I. Corps in the Mincio army of General Alfonso La Marmora in the battle of Custozza against the Austrians.
